The kingcroakers, formerly known as kingfish, are a genus of fish, Menticirrhus, in the family Sciaenidae.

 Species

Menticirrhus americanus - Southern Kingfish: This species grows to 20 inches (51 cm) in length. Seven to eight dark bands mark the sides which shade from dusky above to almost white on the belly, and the inside of the operculum has a dusky coloration. They are found from the Western Caribbean Sea to Cape Cod and most of South and Central America's east coast[3], over sand or mud in depths of at least 5 feet (1.5 m). This species is prized for its flesh, and is fished both commercially and recreationally.
Menticirrhus littoralis - Gulf Kingfish: The body is silvery in color, lacks a dusky operculum and occurs in the surf zone from the Gulf of Mexico to Florida. In all other respects it is similar to M. americanus.
Menticirrhus saxatilis - Northern Kingfish: The size, habits, range and fishery is similar to M. americanus. The coloration is the same too, except for a dark V-shaped mark on the shoulder.

Fishing for Kingcroakers

Though not as highly prized for sport as other fish may be, kingcroakers (also known as whiting in Florida and sea mullet in North Carolina) have the ability to pull out some little, zippy runs. Most specimens that are caught are half a pound or less, but some can reach one or even two pounds. Kingcroakers are most often caught in the surf, but are sometimes found off piers near inlets or in bays. Good lures include small jigs, small spoons, and small plastics. The bait fisherman is best suited with sand fleas or molecrabs, which can be bought frozen at almost any tackle shop or caught live on the beach (look for Vs in the sand pointing towards shore when a wave starts to recede, and start digging a couple inches until you feel a sand flea). Cut shrimp is a close second. In Long Island, New York Great South Bay area; Cap Tree State Park, these fish are simply known as "King Fish." They average in size from 12 inches to 14 inches. Clams seem to be the best bait to catch them.

 Cooking Kingcroakers

Most kingcroakers are too small to fillet, so pan-dressing them is usually the way they are cooked. When big enough they produce mild, but good fillets. A fish fry is best suited for these fish.

La Guaira (Spanish pronunciation: [la ˈɣwai.ɾa]) is the capital city of the Venezuelan state of Vargas and the country's chief port. It was founded in 1577 as an outlet for Caracas, 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the southeast. The town and the port were badly damaged during the December 1999 floods and mudslides that affected much of the region. Today, La Guaira exports cocoa beans, coffee, and tobacco.
The city hosts its own professional baseball team in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League, the Tiburones de La Guaira. They have won seven national championships since their founding in 1962.

La Guaira Bank (Spanish: El Placer de La Guaira) is an underwater ridge that is approximately 12 miles[vague] off the coast from the city of La Guaira in Venezuela. The bank is approximately 12 miles (19 km) long from east to west and 4 miles (6 km) wide from north to south, and it rises from 50 fathoms (90 m) in the surrounding area to 140 fathoms (260 m). The area provides the structure deep-sea animals, and other organism such as gorgonians, sponges, and coral, require for ocean currents to bring their food to them. Westerly currents flow off the coast of Venezuela, and the bank acts as a barrier to this current, creating an upwelling of nutrients to the ocean surface from deep-water stockpiles. These nutrients fuel an explosion of planktonic plant and animal growth, and attract larger animals such as whales, porpoises, seabirds, and large pelagics such as tuna, sharks, wahoo, dolphinfish, and four different types of marlin. It is considered one of the top sport fishing destinations of the world due to the unusually high numbers of blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, and spearfish that congregate at different seasons, and are available year round.
The Venezuelan government, understanding the importance of the sport fishing industry to the community as well as the need to protect this fishery, has enacted regulations that protect these waters from industrial commercial fishing by establishing a fifty-mile-long protection area, allowing only small-scale traditional fishing.

After the founding of Caracas by Spanish in 1567, toward the turn of the 16th century, the Port of La Guaira emerged on the coast and, since that time, has been the gateway to Caracas. This coastal city, almost without land to develop and bathed by the Caribbean Sea, became an important harbour during the 18th century. Attacked by buccaneers and by the English, Dutch, and French armadas, La Guaira was transformed into a fortified, walled city. During the War of Jenkins' Ear (1739–1748), the Battle of La Guaira took place off the coast of La Guaira. This period also saw the trading monopoly of the Royal Gipuzkoan Company of Caracas, which controlled the major ports of La Guaira and Puerto Cabello and was instrumental in the development of large-scale cocoa production along the valleys of the coast. Another small naval battle was fought off La Guaira in 1812, between privateers of the United States and the United Kingdom. Now this is the second port by importance in Venezuela after Port of Puerto Cabello. [1]

This goliath tigerfish was 1.5m (5ft) long and weighed 45kg (7st). It looks hard and it fought even harder.
The prehistoric-looking monsters have been known to attack humans and even crocodiles when they really want to make a point.
Mr Wade said: ‘It is, for all intents and purposes, a giant piranha. It is quite a beast.
‘The teeth on it are incredibly sharp and are about the same length as a great white shark.
‘It also has an extremely powerful bite and has been known to consume prey the same size as itself, attack people and take pieces out of crocodiles.’

Mr Wade, 52, from Bath, Somerset, travelled to a remote section of the Congo river to hunt the beast.
‘It is very rare to catch one, especially by an outsider, because they are found in such a remote and difficult location to get to. There are no guides or lodges on that part of the river.’
He used a large catfish as bait for the tigerfish, Hydrocynus goliath in Latin, and a 90kg (200lb) breaking strain line. He spent eight days trying to catch the fish and returned it to the river afterwards. His battle with the monster can be seen on River Monsters, due to be screened on ITV next month.

Justeru, ingatlah apabila kita mendapat ikan pertama sebaik saja mulakan aktiviti memancing maka itu adalah rezeki dari Allah dan tidak harus dibuang semula ke laut jika ikan itu sangat kecil atau spesies ikan yang tidak berguna.Pendapat dan pandangan beberapa orang nelayan veteran yang ditemui mengakui bahawa rezeki pertama itu jika dibuang semula ke laut atau tasik mahu pun sungai ertinya kita tidak mensyukuri nikmat pemberian Allah sedangkan kita mencari rezeki lumayan buat keluarga.





Pernah berlaku nelayan pulang dengan tangan kosong kerana dikatakan membuang ikan pertama yang tersangat kecil yang dinaikkan dan selepas itu beliau tidak dapat seekor ikan pun hingga pulang. “Bagaimanapun ini tidak harus diletakkan sepenuh kepercayaan, kerana rezeki datangnya dari Allah. Justeru, Allah yang menentukan sama ada kita bernasib baik atau sebaliknya selepas memperoleh tangkapan pertama itu.


“Cuma logiknya rezeki yang diberi itu kita kena mensyukuri dan tidak membuangnya semula,” kata Tok Ayub seorang nelayan veteran dari Kesang Laut, Melaka.Pernah berlaku peristiwa begini kepada seorang pemancing laut di perairan Pulau Jarak yang mendakwa beliau tidak memperoleh seekor ikan pun sepanjang ekspedisi tiga hari dua malam kerana membuang anak ikan kerapu pada tangkapan pertama.Namun beliau tidak langsung mengaitkan bahawa perkara itu menyebabkan beliau tidak bernasib baik.





Cuma ada kemungkinan hari itu bukan harinya.Apa pun bagi Pak Nuri, rezeki yang datang dari Allah adalah pasti dan sebaliknya cuma terpanggil mengisi logik dan kebenaran yang nyata bahawa sebarang rezeki yang diberi Allah sama ada baik atau tidak kita kena menerimanya dengan ikhlas.


Bagi Pak Nuri, langkah terbaik dan mensyukuri nikmat rezeki yang diberi Allah walau sekecil mana sekali pun kita kena menerima dengan ikhlas dan tidak membuangnya semula ke laut bagi pemancing yang memancing di laut malah adalah baik sebarang tangkapan pertama itu diambil sebagai rezeki berkat dari Allah.

The wahoo (Acanthocybium solandri) is a scombrid fish found worldwide in tropical and subtropical seas. It is best known to sports fishermen, as its speed and high-quality flesh make it a prize game fish. In Hawaii, the wahoo is known as ono. Many Hispanic areas of the Caribbean and Central America refer to this fish as peto.

 Description

The body is elongated and covered with small, scarcely visible scales; the back is an iridescent blue, while the sides are silvery, with a pattern of irregular vertical blue bars and have razor sharp teeth.These colors fade rapidly at death. The mouth is large, and both the upper and lower jaws have a somewhat sharper appearance than those of king or Spanish mackerel. Specimens have been recorded at up to 2.5 metres (8 ft 2 in) in length, and weighing up to 83 kilograms (180 lb).[2] Growth can be rapid. One specimen tagged at 5 kilograms (11 lb) grew to 15 kg (33 lb) in one year. Wahoo can swim up to 60 mph (97 km/h).[3] They are some of the fastest fish in the sea.
The wahoo may be distinguished from the related Atlantic king mackerel and from the Indo-Pacific Narrow-barred Spanish mackerel by a fold of skin which covers the mandible when its mouth is closed. In contrast, the mandible of the king mackerel is always visible as is also the case for the smaller Spanish mackerel and Cero mackerel. The teeth of the wahoo are similar to those of king mackerel, but shorter and more closely set together.
The barracuda is sometimes confused with mackerel and wahoo, but is easy to distinguish from the latter two species. Barracuda have prominent scales, larger, dagger-like teeth, and lack the caudal keels and blade-like tail characteristic of the scombrid (mackerel)

 Biology

Wahoo tend to be solitary or occur in loose-knit groups of two or three fish, but where conditions are suitable can be found in schools as large as 100 or more. Their diet is made up of other fish and squid.
Most wahoo taken have a trematode parasite living in their stomach, the giant stomach worm (Hirudinella ventricosa), which does not appear to harm the fish.[3][4]

 Commercial and sports fisheries

The flesh of the wahoo is white to grey, delicate to dense, and highly regarded by many gourmets; indeed the Hawai'ian name for the fish, Ono, is also the Hawai'ian word for "tasty" or "delicious". The taste is similar to mackeral, though arguably less pronounced. This has created some demand for the wahoo as a premium priced commercial food fish. In many areas of its range, such as Hawaii, Bermuda and many parts of the Caribbean, local demand for wahoo is met by artisanal commercial fishermen, who take them primarily by trawling, as well as by recreational sports fishermen who sell their catch.
Although local wahoo populations can be affected by heavy commercial and sports fishing pressure, wahoo as a species are less susceptible to industrial commercial fishing than more tightly schooling and abundant species such as tuna. Wahoo are regularly taken as a by-catch in various commercial fisheries, including longline fisheries for tuna, billfish and dolphinfish (a.k.a. mahi-mahi or dorado) and in tuna purse seine fisheries, especially in sets made around floating objects, which act as a focal point for a great deal of other marine life besides tuna. In 2003, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council issued a Dolphin Wahoo Fishery Management Plan for the Atlantic.[5][6] However, the species as a whole is not considered overfished.[5]
In most parts of its range, the wahoo is a highly prized sport fishing catch. It reaches a good size, is often available not too far from land, and is a very good fighter on light to medium tackle. It is known in sports fishing circles for the speed and strength of its first run. The aggressive habits and razor-sharp teeth of the wahoo can be of considerable annoyance when targeting larger gamefish, however, such as tuna or marlin.

TOKYO (July 2, 2012): Every year in Japan people are hospitalised after eating pufferfish; sometimes the result is fatal. But despite apparent dangers, strict rules on serving the toxic delicacy in Tokyo are to be relaxed.
Aficionados say the tingle that the meat of the pufferfish leaves on your lips -- caused by the potent neurotoxin it contains -- is part of the appeal.
Never mind that the numbness tetrodotoxin creates can progress to paralysis and breathing problems.
Or that, according to the US Food and Drug Administration, consumption can prove fatal within four to six hours and "the victim, although completely paralysed, may be conscious and in some cases completely lucid until shortly before death".
Diners at Shigekazu Suzuki's restaurant, however, can be sure they are in no danger when they select their pufferfish -- an ugly and, to the untutored eye, rather unappetising looking creature -- from a tank near the kitchen.
Suzuki is one of an exclusive coterie of Tokyo chefs who have undergone special training and licensing that allows them to serve the potentially fatal fish, known as fugu in Japan.
"It's not easy for non-licensed people to clean fugu," Suzuki said at his branch of the "Torafugu-tei" chain in upmarket Ginza, as he stripped the toxic internal organs from the freshly killed fish with his razor-sharp knife.
"I have not eaten these bits because I'm scared," he said, gripping the light yellow ovary -- one of the most poisonous parts of the fish -- and throwing it into a locked metal pot.
According to Suzuki, it takes about five years to pass the fugu licence exam, which includes paper and practical tests on how to distinguish poisonous parts from others.
Stringent regulations are often credited with the low level of fatalities, but reports of fishermen dying after eating their own inexpertly-prepared catch continue to surface.
And thrill-seeking diners sometimes ask to be served the banned internal organs. Occasionally, a chef will oblige.
In December, the Tokyo government revoked the licence for a chef at a Michelin two-star restaurant after he had served the fish's liver to a diner who asked for it. She recovered after a few days in hospital.
"Some people really want to try the dangerous parts because they think it might be really good," said Mahiro Shin, a 33-year-old customer at Torafugu-tei.
"And sometimes some people get sick, but most people like us don't take such risks," he said.
A set meal of fugu hot pot at Torafugu-tei costs roughly 5,000 yen (US$63), but prices in some of the more exclusive restaurants in notoriously pricey Tokyo can rise to tens of thousands of yen.
But, said diner Yohei Watanabe, the premium the seasonal delicacy attracts is easily justified.
"It is a bit more expensive than regular fish but it's definitely worth it," he said.
According to Japan's health and welfare ministry, 17 people fell ill after eating fugu last year. One of them died.
Under the present system, restaurants in the Tokyo Metropolitan area, home to some 13 million people, can only serve fugu if they have a specially-trained chef working on site.
But in a move that surprised some observers, the authorities in the capital earlier this year announced plans to relax the rules.
From October eateries will be allowed to buy in ready-prepared fugu -- packaged or frozen, for example -- provided it came from a licensed chef.
Unprepared fugu will continue to be banned from menus at restaurants without licensed personnel.
The rule change is more of a technicality to catch up with current practice, the authorities argue.
Tokyo consumers have long bought fugu meat from other areas of the country via the Internet, most notably from the southern Kyushu region known for its food.
"We have concluded that the revision of the regulation won't lead to any chances of triggering fugu poisoning," a Tokyo Metropolitan government official said.
Chef Suzuki said he was not worried about competition when the new rules come into force.
"Due to the deregulation, more restaurants can serve fugu so that more customers can enjoy it and then will be properly aware of the culture of eating fugu," the 44-year-old told AFP.
"We licensed chefs will continue taking care of it properly," he said. – AFP

The colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, from Greek mesos (middle), nychus (claw), and teuthis (squid)), sometimes called the Antarctic or giant cranch squid, is believed to be the largest squid species in terms of mass. It is the only known member of the genus Mesonychoteuthis. Though it is known from only a few specimens, current estimates put its maximum size at 12–14 metres (39–46 ft) long,[1] based on analysis of smaller and immature specimens, making it the largest known invertebrate.

 Morphology

Unlike the giant squid, whose arms and tentacles only have suckers lined with small teeth, the colossal squid's limbs are also equipped with sharp hooks: some swivelling, others three-pointed.[2] Its body is wider and stouter, and therefore heavier, than that of the giant squid. Colossal squid are believed to have longer mantles than giant squid, although their tentacles are shorter.
The squid exhibits abyssal gigantism. The beak of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni is the largest known of any squid, exceeding that of Architeuthis (giant squid) in size and in robustness. The colossal squid also has the largest eyes documented in the animal kingdom; a partly collapsed specimen measured 27 centimetres (11 in).[3][4]

 Distribution

The squid's known range extends thousands of kilometres northward from Antarctica to southern South America, southern South Africa, and the southern tip of New Zealand, making it primarily an inhabitant of the entire circumantarctic Southern Ocean.

 Ecology and life history

Little is known about the life of this creature, but it is believed to feed on prey such as chaetognatha, large fish like the Patagonian toothfish, and other squid in the deep ocean using bioluminescence. The colossal squid is thought to have a slow metabolic rate, needing only around 30 g of prey daily.[5] Estimates of its energetic demands suggest that it is a slow-moving ambush predator, using its large eyes primarily for predator detection rather than active hunting.[5][6]
Based on capture depths of a few specimens, and beaks found in sperm whale stomachs, the adult colossal squid ranges at least to a depth of 2.2 kilometres (7,200 ft), and juveniles can go as deep as 1 kilometre (3,300 ft). It is believed to be sexually dimorphic, with mature females generally being much larger than mature males, as is common in many species of invertebrates.
The squid's method of reproduction has not been observed, although some data on their reproduction can be inferred from anatomy. Since males lack an organ called a hectocotylus (an arm used in other cephalopods to transfer a spermatophore to the female), they probably use a penis instead, which would be used to directly implant sperm into females.
Many sperm whales carry scars on their backs believed to be caused by the hooks of colossal squid. Colossal squid are a major prey item for Antarctic sperm whales feeding in the Southern Ocean; 14% of the squid beaks found in the stomachs of these sperm whales are those of the colossal squid, which indicates that colossal squid make up 77% of the biomass consumed by these whales.[7] Many other animals also feed on this squid, including beaked whales (such as the bottlenose whales), pilot whales, southern elephant seals, Patagonian toothfish, sleeper sharks (Somniosus antarcticus), and albatrosses (e.g., the Wandering and Sooty albatrosses). However, beaks from mature adults have only been recovered from those animals large enough to take such prey (i.e. sperm whales and sleeper sharks), while the remaining predators are limited to eating juveniles or young adults.[8]

 Timeline

  • 1925 – Species was first discovered in the form of two tentacles found in the stomach of a sperm whale.[9]
  • 1981 – A Russian trawler in the Ross Sea, off the coast of Antarctica, caught a large squid with a total length of 4 metres (13 ft), which was later identified as an immature female of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni.[10]
  • 2003 – A complete specimen of a subadult female was found near the surface with a total length of 6 m (20 ft) and a mantle length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft).[11]
  • 2005 – A specimen was captured at a depth of 1,625 m (5,331 ft) while taking a toothfish from a longline off South Georgia Island. Although the mantle was not brought aboard, the mantle length was estimated at over 2.5 m (8.2 ft), and the tentacles measured 2.3 m (7.5 ft). The animal is thought to have weighed between 150 and 200 kilograms (330 and 440 lb).[12]
  • 2007 – The largest recorded specimen was captured by a New Zealand fishing boat off Antarctica. It was initially estimated to measure 10 m (33 ft) in length and weigh 450 kg (990 lb). The squid was taken back to New Zealand for scientific study.[13] A study on the specimen later showed that its actual weight was 495 kg (1,090 lb), but that it only measured 4.2 m (14 ft) in total length as a result of the tentacles shrinking post mortem.[14]

 Largest known specimen

This specimen, caught in early 2007, is the largest cephalopod ever recorded. Here it is shown in its live state during capture, with the delicate red skin still intact and the mantle characteristically inflated.
On February 22, 2007, it was announced by authorities in New Zealand that the largest known colossal squid had been captured. The specimen weighed 495 kg (1,091 lb) and was initially estimated to measure 10 m (33 ft) in total length. Fishermen on the vessel San Aspiring, owned by the Sanford seafood company, caught the animal in the freezing Antarctic waters of the Ross Sea. It was brought to the surface as it fed on an Antarctic toothfish that had been caught off a long line. It would not let go of its prey and could not be removed from the line by the fishermen, so they decided to catch it instead. They managed to envelop it in a net, haul it aboard, and freeze it. The specimen eclipsed the previous largest find in 2003 by about 195 kilograms (430 lb),[15][16] although it is still considerably smaller than some estimates have predicted. The specimen was frozen in a cubic metre of water and transported to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, New Zealand's national museum.[17][18] Media reports suggested that scientists at the museum were considering using a giant microwave to defrost the squid because defrosting the squid at room temperatures would take days and it would be likely for the outside to rot while the core remained frozen.[19] However, they later opted for the more conventional approach of thawing the specimen in a bath of salt water.[20][21] After thawing, the squid measured only 4.2 m (14 ft) in total length, with the tentacles having shrunk significantly.[14] Although initially thought to be a male, closer inspection of the specimen showed it to be a female.[4]

Thawing and dissection of the specimen took place at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa[20] under the direction of senior biologist Chris Paulin, with technician Mark Fenwick, Dutch marine biologist and toxicologist Olaf Blaauw, AUT biologist Steve O'Shea, Tsunemi Kubodera, and AUT biologist Kat Bolstad.
Parts of the specimen have been examined:
  • The beak is considerably smaller than some found in the stomachs of sperm whales,[22][23] suggesting there are colossal squid much larger than this one.[22][23]
  • The eye is 27 cm (10.63 in) wide, with a lens 12 cm across. This is the largest eye of any known animal.[3] These measurements are of the partly collapsed specimen: when living the eye was probably 30[4] to 40 cm (12 to 16 in) across.[24]
  • Inspection of the specimen with an endoscope revealed ovaries containing thousands of eggs.[4]
